Once you think Florence has everything you want, the city slaps you in the face and reminds you that its constantly evolving in the most surprising of ways. Like for example, a jaw-dropping frescoed-church that was turned into a library has now been turned into a vibrant yoga studio in the center of Florence, unlike any other in Italy (or the world, in our opinion).
Yoga Garage was founded and officially inaugurated last week by friends Tess Obermeier and Guido Baligioni, who practiced together and eventually realized that they shared a common philosophy on the age-old practice. The Vinyasa lovers explain, "We both had the dream of opening our own yoga school. When we found this amazing space it was love at first sight and we made it happen. That is how Yoga Garage was born. We had taught together in the past and found that our perspectives on yoga are very similar. For us, there is only one yoga. We have studied different methods such as Ashtanga, Iyengar, Scaravelli, Power, Bikram, and Yin. From our continuous research comes our dynamic flow, a connection of breath and movement (vinyasa). And we want to share this with the Florence community."
The space is located right on Piazza San Lorenzo, in the heart of Renaissance Florence, surrounded by the iconic San Lorenzo Church, flanked by the Medici Chapels, the daily street market and all of the yummy foodie options for a post-sweaty yoga meal that abound nearby (read: the Mercato Centrale). Our friends expand: "Yoga Garage's abode is a place of great beauty: the Biblioteca di San Giovannino dei Padri Scolopi. The building originates back to 1351. The church, first transformed into a library and now the most beautiful place in Florence where yoga enthusiasts can unroll their mats, has frescoes adorning the ceilings and walls, ancients books and a chill-out zone with a view of the whole space. All of this makes Yoga Garage a truly unique place."
Offering an average of four classes daily, Tess and Guido also plan on holding workshops and retreats outside of Florence in the coming months.
If anything, a visit to the ethereal studio will help you become centered by just staring at the beauty of the centuries-old decoration. Add a dose of powerful yoga sequences led by these guys and you are ready to face any challenge.
