We still haven't been to a Fiorentina match, but we've been to the Scheggi Panineria countless times, located a block away from the Artemio Franchi stadium. Opened in 1952, the charming tiny hole-in-the-wall is the meeting point for all of the Fiorentina "tifosi" (super fans) before a game to grab a bite and a drink.
And the place really does show off its love for the viola! Not only are the walls plastered with memorabilia and photos of Fiorentina players who are fan of their mouth-watering paninis, but the owners themselves have created a large selection of tapenades named after the local gods of soccer.
Even though they also serve great daily pasta specials (primi), we usually go straight for the paninis. All of these heavenly creations are made to order starting out with a traditional tuscan focaccia (round, lightly salted), a prosciutto of choice (cotto, crudo, etc.), and topped with a homemade sauce such as truffle mayonnaise, spicy pepper cream, or arugula and nut spread... We usually order two, along with a glass of chianti to help the digestion.
