Portuguese Clam Chowder

Castle Hill Inn, a historic and quaint oceanside retreat in Newport, Rhode Island is celebrating the state's Portuguese heritage with its first annual "NewPortugal" Wine & Food Week. 

Yes - you read that right. Rhode Island has a sizable Portuguese population. So much so that they hold a huge Portugal Day celebration every year. Accounting for roughly 9.7% of the population of the state, a large wave of immigration from the mediterranean nation took place in the mid-late 1900s. Who knew?!

From March 7-14 “NewPortugal” Wine & Food Week will feature a residency by acclaimed Portuguese Chef George Mendes at Castle Hill Inn. Mendes (of New York City's ALDEA) is joining forces with the hotel's Executive Chef Karsten Hart to create a special menu paying homage to Portugal's gastro-traditions. One dish that stands out: Shrimp “Alhinho” with smoked baby beets, vanilla, pressed jus. 

The picturesque Relais & Château property is also offering special travel packages for foodies looking for a unique escape.
