It’s not offensive to say that our beloved Florence is lacking in the international cuisine department, although a few tried and true restaurants measure up. For example, just this fall, a new Greek restaurant “Callistos” opened up this fall in the suburbs of Florence, and is now our hands down favorite Greek joint in the city.
The delightful and joyful owner of the restaurant, Gino, is a first generation Italian whose family immigrated from Greece years ago, but have retained their culinary (and hospitality) traditions in both the kitchen at home and at the restaurant. With an almost entire Greek staff and chefs, the expansive restaurant recreates the vibe of an Aegean fishing town with whitewashed walls, bright blue accents throughout and even fishing nets and other Greek paraphernalia throughout the space.
The dishes are mouthwatering. We’re talking some seriously flavorful moussaka, gyros, souvlaki, and our addiction: greek mezze including tzatziki and babaganoush. On some nights, live Greek music drowns out the restaurant and Gino will most likely force you to partake in traditional dancing in the middle of the dining room. A great mid-meal workout to burn some calories and make way for dessert, which are also homemade and explosions of honey creations like lemon honey cake and baklava.
